For the love of the music…..

Happy Birthday Skydog, Rest in Peace

Posted by jhochstat on November 20, 2008

Duane Allman was born Howard Duane Allman on November 20, 1946.   Although your time on this planet was brief, the musical contributions will live on forever.  The music you made with the Allman Brothers, Derek & The Dominoes, Delaney & Bonnie and countless sessions has withstood the test of time.  There are some who play in a similar fashion to you but there will never be anyone quite like you anytime soon. There is a reason why Rolling Stone Magazine named you #2 on the list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time!

As we approach the 40th anniversary of The Allman Brothers Band, just remember that Warren & Derek’s slide playing will always be Duane’s licks!

R.I.P. Brother Duane, the road goes on forever……

Duane’s licks can never be duplicated of course, but Derek or Warren may play Duane’s licks a little differently maybe, but their licks are still good. I’ve been listening to a lot of guitar players in my day, and I saw Duane play at the Fillmore in 1971, I was 12 at the time. I was brought up on jazz as a kid but when I heard Duane and the Allmans jam I was blown away, for real. Duane was and will always be the best slide guitarist of all time. On those important recordings at the fillmore, he never faltered. His playing was perfect. Just listen to Done Somebody Wrong, or the slide on Drunken Hearted boy, I always said, How can anyone make the guitar sound so incredible?
