De La Vega-The Elmo Wall
Posted by jhochstat on June 19, 2008
One of the cool things about living near East Harlem (El Barrio) and working in the East Village is that I am privy to the work of one of New York City’s best urban artists De La Vega. De La Vega is known for having his art sprout up in chalk on the sidewalks of East Harlem or in front of his store at 102 St. Marks Place (between 1st Avenue & Avenue A). You have seen his slogan Become Your Dream – De La Vega scrawled all over the place.
James De La Vega also happens to be a Cornell University educated former teacher. You can usually find him in front of his store hanging out, talking to people wearing his trademark sailor’s cap.
Recently he decided to do a whole series of different Elmo’s.
Some are downright hilarious, some are satirical and several are a little adventurous to say the least. But overall De La Vega once again proves that art can be whatever you make it. If you happen to be in the East Village, take a walk down St Marks Place to De La Vega’s store and check the Elmos out. You most certainly will laugh out loud (and probably be taken aback by a few). Great statement, not sure how long he will have it in the windows though. Try to get there if you can.
Please stop in the store as he has many other pieces of his art for sale.
